The Rubicon Models BM-13N Katyusha Rocket Launcher kit in 1/56 (28mm) scale offers a highly detailed model of one of World War II’s most iconic and fearsome Soviet weapons. Here's a comprehensive overview:
BM-13N Katyusha Rocket Launcher
Historical Background:
Development and Use: The BM series of multiple rocket launchers, commonly known as "Katyusha" by Soviet troops, played a significant role in World War II. Named after the letter 'K' seen on the rockets from the Voronezh Komintern Factory, these launchers were designed to saturate large areas with high explosives quickly.
Performance: Katyushas could deliver a powerful barrage faster than conventional artillery but were less accurate and required more time to reload. Despite these limitations, their ability to deliver rapid and devastating salvos made them highly effective. However, the large smoke and dust clouds generated during firing made them vulnerable to counter-battery fire.
Mounting and Mobility: Typically mounted on trucks, Katyushas could be quickly redeployed after firing to evade enemy retaliation. The Studebaker US6 6x6 truck, provided through Lend-Lease, was chosen for its durability and excellent off-road capability. The BM-13N ("normalizovanniy" - 'normalized') was standardized in 1943, with 1,800 units produced. By the end of the war, about 10,000 Katyusha launchers had been manufactured.
Impact on the War:
Effectiveness: A battery of four BM-13 launchers could unleash 4.35 tons of explosives in a matter of seconds, impacting a 400,000-square-meter area. This was roughly equivalent to the firepower of 72 conventional guns. The psychological effect of the Katyusha was significant, with the distinctive howl of the rockets earning it the nickname "Stalin’s organ" from German troops.
